Do I need to hire a builder for my swimming pool?

When you are getting your swimming pool build it can be common to think that the swimming pool installation team takes responsibility for the entire build project.

And this can be the case sometimes. But most pool installation companies are not construction companies. And most builders are not specialists in swimming pool construction.

So it is likely that you will need both a swimming pool installation team and a builder.

What will a builder be responsible for in my swimming pool install?

What you need a builder for exactly, will depend on what type of pool construction you go for.

➡️A comparison: concrete pool vs liner pool vs one-piece pool.

Most pool specialists do not get involved in the excavation work. So you will almost always need a builder for this section of the pool construction.

If you have a block work pool (liner) then the build may also do this part of the construction along side the pool team.

If you build a sprayed concrete pool, then this is usually carried out by a specialist contractor through the pool construction team.

And a one piece pool arrives on site pre-manufactured, so will not need a builder for the construction.

The builder may also be able to help with the pool surround most pool specialists only work to the edge of the pool. Anything beyond that will require another trade.

How much will a builder charge to build my pool?

Without knowing what type of pool construction you are looking for it is difficult to say how much a builder will charge.

Again, this is where having an architects designs and plans come in. This will allow you to go to a builder and gain an accurate quote for the building work required in the swimming pool installation.

If I hire a builder why do I need a swimming pool contractor?

Can’t I just hire a builder then?

If a builder does the grounds work and sometimes builds the pool shell then why do you need a swimming pool contractor at all? Can’t the builder just do it?

Well, for most of the installation of all types of pools, even if they are not physically doing the work, the pool contractor will be heavily involved. This is because most builders are experienced or specialised in building swimming pools. They need the guidance for this section to ensure everything is to standard.

And once the actual shell is constructed there is still a lot of work to do. The pipework and all the plant room including the pumps, filters, heaters etc has to be installed. You will need a swimming pool contractor for this.

In summary

So do you need a builder for a swimming pool installation.

Absolutely yes.

It’s worth getting the builder and pool contractor on board at the same time. Or perhaps having one contract the other depending on the size of the installation to ensure everything runs smoothly from the beginning and everything is done in the right order.
